Tavistock is the birthplace of Sir Francis Drake, who reputedly played bowls on Plymouth Hoe while awaiting the sighting of the Spanish Armada. He was knighted in 1581 by Queen Elizabeth I aboard the Golden Hind, the ship in which he circumnavigated the world.
Events held at Tavistock include the annual fair called the Goosey Fair, which has been held on the second Wednesday of October ever since 1116. There is also a Hot-air Balloon Fiesta every August Bank Holiday weekend.
